After an unprecedented (most used word of the year?) 2020 where COVID, iso and double doughnuts have become part of our daily language, it’s time to look forward and gain some control back over our lives.
Putting together a plan for a low-waste 2021 is a great place to start.
How We Do Everyday Low-Waste
In our house, most days take the same sort of shape - get up, eat, pack the kids’ lunches, sneak a morning coffee in, then work like a troggen to try and get through the impossible to-do list, hopefully get some time to pick up some supplies for dinner, feed the troops and attempt to clean up before flopping into bed worrying about that never-ending to-do list.
We get it. Life is busy. So how can we accomplish a low-waste lifestyle that slides straight into your daily routine without it requiring more time and effort?
Let’s walk through our day together and see how it can be done.
The Morning Rush - Bamboo Toothbrush
Side note - why do kids not move at the same pace as us? Anyway, after breakfast we all head to the bathroom and brush our teeth. 23 billion plastic toothbrushes (National Geographic, 2019) are thrown away worldwide every year, so swapping to an eco-friendly bamboo toothbrush will greatly reduce your footprint. Bamboo is fast-growing and can be composted. Tick.
The School Run - Stainless Steel Lunch Boxes
Before we head out the door, we pack our lunch for the day using our Stainless Steel Lunch Boxes. They are leak-free and super strong to endure when the boys throw their bags around, as they inevitably do! A roll, a snack and a sweet treat all fit in easily.
The Quiet Coffee Moment - Reusable Coffee Cup
Once the kids have been bundled off to school it’s coffee time. Whether it’s a homemade brew to take to work or a quick stop at the café, a reusable coffee cup is a must. No more collecting empty cups in the back seat of the car! Simply bring it home at the end of the day and pop it in the dishwasher.

The After-Work Shop - Reusable Shopping Bags
After a busy day, a quick stop off on the way home can be a trap for waste collection. Packing some reusable shopping bags, including produce bags, into the boot of the car is a fab way to prevent more plastic bags sneaking into your home. We love our Organic Cotton Mesh bag as it expands to fit all our supplies. If there’s a spill along the way, it’s no drama as the bags can go straight into the washing machine.
The Dinner Leftovers - Beeswax Wraps and Silicone Food Covers
Somehow we battle through dinner (why don’t kids all like the same meal?) and if we’re lucky we have some leftovers. We’ll use a beeswax wrap or a silicone food cover to store these in the fridge for lunch the next day. No cling wrap in sight!
The end. Well, apart from cleaning the dishes, tidying the toys, folding the washing….ahhh it’s never ending!!
There are many products out there, but think about your lifestyle and what will fit in. Living low waste doesn’t have to mean big changes. Just a few simple swaps that will become your new normal. So get organised for 2021 with your own range of eco-friendly products and you won’t look back. You’ll even save time not having to roll the bin out each week!
